These dynamic two figure studies on shaped aluminum focus on the immediate physical interaction, tension, and kinetic balance between subjects in conflict and those defying it. By paring down the composition to an isolated pair and removing the background plane, the works emphasize Witz’s hyperrealistic detail, spatial depth, and fluid execution on metal.
"As with all these pieces, the portraits and single figures were conceived as history paintings—current concerns clothed in traditional academic tropes. While costuming and prop wrangling, as well as photographing and composing, I was careful to avoid polemic or negative argument. I wanted the paintings to resonate with our current situation, of course, but, like the best history painting, to be dynamic beyond our time."
