Conceived as intimate extractions from the History Paintings series, these single figure portraits apply 19th century academic oil techniques to modern subjects. Free from overt polemic or immediate media context, each study isolates individual presence within broader moments of collective anxiety, treating contemporary subjects with the gravity and luminosity of classical portraiture.
"As with all these pieces, the portraits and single figures were conceived as history paintings—current concerns clothed in traditional academic tropes. While costuming and prop wrangling, as well as photographing and composing, I was careful to avoid polemic or negative argument. I wanted the paintings to resonate with our current situation, of course, but, like the best history painting, to be dynamic beyond our time."
